PINEVILLE, La. – Command Sgt. Maj. Veronica LaBeaud of Pineville, La., wipes away tears from her daughter, Melanique LaBeaud, after Veronica was promoted during a ceremony at Camp Beauregard in Pineville, Dec. 3, 2013, making her the first-ever African-American female command sergeant major in the Louisiana National Guard. Melanique travelled from Gainesville, Fla., where she is an audiology doctorial student at the University of Florida for the special promotion. “I’m so proud of her.
